Professor Shyam Narayan Lal is a distinguished historian and alumnus of the Centre for
Historical Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. With over 27 years of teaching
and research experience, he has made significant contributions to the fields of history and
historiography, with a particular focus on the Jammu region.
Professor Lal has taught at various prestigious institutions, including colleges affiliated with
the University of Delhi, the University of Jammu, and the Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) Jammu. His broad teaching portfolio reflects his deep engagement with both
undergraduate and postgraduate education, and his commitment to fostering critical historical
inquiry across diverse academic settings.
In addition to his teaching, he has held key academic leadership roles, including founding
Head of the Department of Journalism and Media Studies and Director of the Centre for
Studies of History and Culture of Ladakh at the University of Jammu. In these capacities, he
has championed interdisciplinary research and promoted cultural and regional studies.
Currently, he serves as Senior Consultant and Chairperson of Anandam: The Centre for
Happiness at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Jammu, where he continues to
contribute to academic innovation and institutional development. His extensive body of work,
including numerous research papers and books, underscores his enduring commitment to
advancing historical scholarship and enriching academic discourse.
